How do I handle foreign keyword searches

I need to cater for english and chinese keyword searches in google UK
The Chinese searches are in mandarin.
And if a Chinese speaker enters a mandarin characters term, they do get results in mandarin in Google UK

So what's the best way to set things up on my site which is in English, so I can
rank well in mandarin as well?

You may need to have your pages translated to Mandarin and use hreflang= headers (meta tags or directory headers). Google will use the rel="alternate" hreflang="x" attributes to serve the right language or regional URL in Search results.

For the brest results you will "have to have your pages translated to Mandarin" by a native speaker who knows your widget subject / industry. Machine code only goes so far for genuine visitors however G does tend to like AI garbage at times therefore you may get away with that!

The site is totally in Mandarin. But what i can't get my head around is, do i optimize the page as normal on say, keyword1 in mandarin into title, H1, metas,body content etc.

OK, I read in the opening post that the site is in English, hence the suggestion. If you have already dealt with the translation and meta data, the translation should be quite similar.

RedBar's suggestion of having the translation done by a native speaker of the language is spot on. They should be able to offer you ideas on which words or phrases to target for the content of the page. Not being a speaker of Mandarin, I can only suggest you do have a native speaker to count on.

Word for word automated translations often produce nonsense phrases because grammar syntax differs widely. Google might rank that for a short time, then it can disappear.
