Now the potential site visitor does't need to click through to our sites to check out our videos, and potentially browse other pages, buy products, etc.

He can now stay on Google's SERP and preview through all the videos in the carosel til he finds the one he's interested in... or not and just stay on Google.

He's going to youtube. Even for requests not really made for video. And who owns Youtube?

Why shouldn't a search engine make it easy for searchers to identify what's worth looking at (from the searcher's point of view)? A search engine's constituents are its users.

As a publisher, I'm not eager to attract disappointed hit-and-run visitors (I much prefer visitors who are interested in what I have to offer), so from my POV, more useful search results are a win-win.

It's hard to avoid disappointing your users when the search engine knowingly and intentionally retitles your page to make it look as if you've got an exact match for the searcher's query, when your own title would have made it clear that it's nothing of the sort. At least a video clip is a consecutive six-second segment of your own video. There's no fudging that.

It's silent, remember, so the viewer can't tell what you're playing.* This is conjecturing that your videos don't begin with you tuning the piano, which would certainly be interesting and informative, though perhaps not very thrilling visually.


* Years ago I tried to watch the Mingus Epitaph when it was performed on TV. After half an hour they were still tuning their instruments, and I gave up.

You're missing the point entirely. Or maybe pretending to miss the point. :-}

No matter how engaging a video (since that's what we're talking about here) might be, if it isn't the kind of video that the searcher is looking for, he or she is likely to bail on it. And rightly so. Having a video snippet in the carousel should increase the chances that searchers who do click through will stick around to watch the whole thing.

To put it another way, the searchers who have seen a snippet should be more likely to "convert," if by "convert" you mean taking the step from searching to viewing.
