Why Is Google Removing So Many Images? Or Is It Something Else?

I used to have thousands of unique images ranking well in Google image search however many have been removed even though they were unique.

In early December I launched two new trade widget sites of about 100 & 175 pages, all the pages have been indexed and some are ranking well however not one single image is being shown under site:example.com

I am seeing evergreen widget sites losing hundreds of images therefore my question is, is site:example.com broken and not showing anywhere near true results or is Google having a cull of anything and everything to do with images?

Is anyone else seeing similar?

FWIW many of my global trade competitors are also seeing the same, it's not just me.

Couldn't find any news concerning Google reducing the number images indexed in Image Search. However I did see that they are in transition of adopting new "machine learning" to reduce the data needed for high-resolution images, so maybe this is why there appears to be some changes going on.

In my case, this is the exact opposite, since mid december, I noticed a constant increase of the number of images from my sites being indexed, and also, a significant increase of traffic from Google image search. May be Google changed the way it perceives, selects and ranks images.

Image indexing takes a long time. It is not unusual for it to take more than two month. This was mentioned by John Muller in several hangouts and it has been my experience. So that may explain the issue with the new site's images. As for the removal of existing image, I don't know.
