My web site is 1 year old. Should I use some of the search engine submitter's that claim to submit your site to 100's of search engines?

I am already with "Google" and I have Google webmaster tools.
I am already with "Bing" and I have Bing webmaster tool.
I am already with "Yahoo".

I just don't know if I should do the other because "Google" is getting so particular, I don't want to be penalized.

Also should I submit to "Free" Directories as long as the are relevant to my business. Will this improve my ranking? (You know getting more backlinks?)

Thanks

Free directories will not bring you any good. The SE Submitters will also not bring you any good.

Work on enhancing your website with new unique stuff on a regular basis. This is what will help improve your rankings.

It's something that was relevant 15 years ago, not now.

I would not use the submit services, legitimate search engines that you want to be in will find your site and I would bet you already have most of the 100's of search engines visiting your site as it is. Most free directories are worth every penny. (nothing) There are useful industry directories, but most "add your site" directories won't send much good traffic.

If you want more traffic you need to make your site the place where people send their friends, it needs to be better than the sites that show above yours in the search results. That means making sure that your content is fresh and unique, your navigation is simple and intuitive, you don't limit visitors because of device limitations or coding errors.

You need a way to track your stats, who is visiting, from where, what do they do on your site and that can help you improve. The list goes on, but does not include things that worked 10 - 12 years ago like directories. Backlinks in general do not carry the value they did even a year ago, I would not concentrate on links as the winning ticket. Try to interest other related sites or groups and you may get new traffic and links. Interact in social media, you may find that one who loves to share their new favorite place. Read through some of the suggestions in the Link Development Forum: [webmasterworld.com...] and be creative.

Consider this one more vote NOT to use those submission tools / sites to submit to a bazillion directories.
