Goog is odd at times. Some changes seem to goose up the PR for a short time but ultimately returns to where it was originally. And some changes kill PR altogether.

Ok thanks, it did seem a bit weird. I was initially surprised at the huge jump from 4 to 7.

FYI the 'nofollow' was added on the text links sold via TLA and was added to protect the PR7, no idea if this had any affect though...

It was most likely a 'misprint' that caused it to spike in the first place since there was a TBPR update about 6 weeks ago and it should not change every 10 days... Basically they only update the ToolBar PageRank every 3 months or so, and my guess is either you visited a page with a PR of 7 and then your home page shortly after and the 7 got cached there by mistake, or the wrong number was published by G's server for a few days for some reason.

This probably had nothing to do with your 'nofollow' change.

In Firefox, if I have too many tabs open, the PR becomes funky sometimes and can pick up the PR of the other sites in the other tabs.

So to make sure, I open a new window with only my site and then things correct itself, and then the euphoria settles.

Is TBPR still updating every 3 months or so?

If so, we should be due an update around now no?

You're right - the last PR Update was at the beginning of April [webmasterworld.com...]

So we might well see a PR Update on the toolbar soon. But the schedule is not fixed, and this would be the first update since Caffeine rolled out. It will be interesting to see how it works this time around.

I can't believe people still follow visible PR.

That's not how "PR flow" works these days.

My understanding is that you can't 'protect' PR by using no follow. Whilst the PR will not flow through to the links it won't be retained on the page with the no follow'ed links either.

That makes it sound like links lower a page's PR, and that's not exactly the way I understand it. If you have a page and add a link to it, the totla page Rank does not go down. But there is a complex situation involved and some people online have been using language that makes it sound liek that happens.

Here's how I understand it. A page has an amount of PR - and its "vote" for another page through a link, carries a share of that total PR. But that weight calculation is a way of giving a certain value to the vote. The fact that there's a vote, in itself, doesn't subtract any PR from the original page.

It actually gets a bit more complex, because the "votes" keep on going around the web. So some of the weight eventually gets passed back to the page through backlinks - and this happens over and over. but with each step, the power of a vote gets dampened a bit, so that after a while, instead of growing off to infinity, the total PR of any URL settles down to a limit.

So the change in nofollow calculation means that the other links pon the apge are not voting any "more" PR just because a nofollow exists. And in that way, slightly less PR (just a tiny sliver, really) is being voted around and around in that continuing, "iterated" calculation.
