Indexed Pages in Google Reduces in Number

Hello All,
I am a webmaster of a website and for the last 3-4 months my website index pages reduces in numbers regularly. When i see site:www.example.com/ in google search box. So can anyone tell me what the exact reason for reducing my index links in google.

Any Suggestion will be highly appreciated.

This can be a difficult problem to understand. First, know that the site: operator numbers are sometimes just plain strange. If you have five directories and do the queries site:example.com/directory1/, site:example.com/directory2/ and so on, it is common to see a higher total that you would by just doring the site:example.com search. Google has a back end tangle.

You can also find urls that will show a result if you simply paste them into the search box, but never show on the site: operator search. So it's becoming more and more of a challenge to use the site: operator for intelligence gathering.

One thing you can depend on is when a url on your site gets a referral from Google Search - then it's got be in the index. So the most important factor is whether your traffic has been affected.
