For site:www.domain.com I got 6,900

You have a serious duplicate content issue (maybe several issues) to fix.

What does Google list as the URL of the root page of the site?

Is that listed root page the first result in a site: search?

A blogger I know had the same problem two weeks ago -- PR dropped from 4 to 0 overnight. He didn't even have paid text link ads or paid reviews.

He appealed to Google, and they gave his PR4 back after 2 or 3 days. Apparently, Google messed it up somewhere (I think).

Hi, could you just explain how to use this tool and what it shows?

The first search should show only urls that Google has in the index that do not use the "www". The second should show only urls that do use the www subdomain. This gives you a picture of how much your site is affected by this kind of "canonical issue".

that when you use

site:domain.com -inurl:www

if you use any subdomains like news.domain.com they will show up

Is this question directed at knowing if the site could have duplicate issue with the home page as - / and index.htm?

If a site has its internal pages linking to the home as index.htm and Google still shows only one listing (/ or index.htm) do you reckon it shouldn't concern much?

same here, i went down over night and my projekt is from 2001. i had over 40 000 links from PR 7 - 1...i really dunno what is wrong now but it seems that my work the last years was for the ass...its not that my users are gone, but the PR was my sign to show success...

I have had the site since 03. In that time it has ranked as high PR7 but been a PR4 since two updates ago.
I had the 31 penalty for about a year and a half. Got out of that about 3 months ago.

I have done virtually nothing to it the past year and a half, and started only yesterday exchanging links.
Next thing I know PR0!
The site:domain.com -inurl:www is the same number.

I'm hoping it is an error although I do sell the odd text link now and again.

If you are linking to /index.html and Google is listing / in the SERPs then you are wasting all your internal PageRank by linking to the wrong one.

I am not sure if I am with you on that point g1smd. The fact that Google returns / for a homepage that is index.htm, shouldn't it indicate that Google has merged index.htm into /?

Plus, when the link command in Google for / shows internal pages as linking to it, while they actually link with index.htm, doesn't it show that those internal links are not wasted?

Google may do some of the housecleaning for you, but you are still "wasting" link juice. Whether that's an insignificant or a major issue depends on the site.

For example, if you disallow duplicate content URLs using robots.txt, that still doesn't prevent those URLs from accumulating PageRank even if those URLs no longer show up in search results.

Yes, you still can find instances where index.html and the domain root have different PageRank, so it's best to make sure.

I agree, not doing the house cleaning on our part will open up chances of going wrong, with likely indexing of both / and index.htm.

I was contesting the suggestion that linking to home with index.htm, when Google has only retained /, will waste the link juice from inner pages. But the idea that doing so may lead to potential issues, I agree with.
