It's been ages since I have noticed fresh tags and suddenly today I noticed quite a few sites with a fresh tag of Sept.12th. Is google finally back to crawling more frequently? Google bot used to crawl my site daily until last spring and now I'm lucky to see Gbot once a week.

If you need him to be more specific, you aren't familiar with them at all.

Fresh tags are a "tag" that used to be quite common next to results in Google. They showed listings that were recently crawled. Would say something like "Fresh - Sept 12" etc.

I have to say, I haven't seen any recently, but it's not uncommon for Google to be running various tests on different datacenters.

I noticed this - usually my site was being tagged every week or so. Over the last two weeks it's changed to every 2 or 3 days - although interestingly mainly on pages that are linked to from external sites.

No...this is something a bit different.

They became known as "fresh tags" because that's what they said..."Fresh" then the date it was crawled right next to the listing in the SERPs.

This began a couple of years ago, when Google had two different types of bots running around, the "deep bot" and the "fresh bot". The deep bot did the deep or full indexing for the monthly updates and the fresh bot did the indexing inbetween the full updates.

This stopped quite a while back now when Google went to a system of continual updates (the end of the old style "Google Dances" where the crawl info from the previous crawl was rolled out) which is why they aren't generally seen anymore.

By the way Jake, wasn't trying to be rude in the first post. You just can't get much more specific than "fresh tags" as that is exactly what they were always called ( I haven't seen one now in well over a year).

Fresh tags have been on the results virtually every day this year, and certainly every day this month.

SteveB:
Yes there has been fresh tags all along but suddenly I'm seeing them in my little corner of the web refreshed every day. I have not had a new fresh tag 2 days in a row for over 6 months. The last 3 days I have had a new fresh tag.

Has G. changed the name of their bot? I cannot find any record of the old Gbot in my stats. The only Gbot I can find is their Adbot and Imagebot and yet I am getting crawled.

All of Google's spiders now share a common cache -- so if Adbot spiders a URL, then the regular Mozilla googlebot doesn't need to eat up your bandwidth, or Google's, by grabbing the same URL a second time.
