OK, so here's my crazy prediction for the next few months or, in the better case scenario, a few years. Obviously, the smaller websites will get obliterated completely since the AI uses way too much energy to bother with them. It's simpler to comb through fewer larger sites. But what bugged me was the side tabs with price range, availability, color and so on. When navigating the web using Google it feels like I am using Amazon. And that's why I think that the next move is to take down Amazon. Hear me out. Imagine removing anything related to Amazon and having store websites pay for the higher spots - they will have to use a proper Schema to allow the bots to gather the info and place it in the browser. Then, when you search for which color shirt matches your jeans, Google will simply give you only the store links. No need to have huge warehouses since the seller most likely has the product, Google will just act as Amazon, a middleman. We're already almost there, so why would Google share anything with Amazon? Just make Google.com a huge store. In the meantime, use reviews and product info from forums for legitimacy and you're set.

Oh, and I forgot about YouTube which is perfect for product reviews, keep it all in the big Alphabet family. No need for pesky third-parties.

Well now, it seems that I may have gotten it right, although a bit later than other guys. Here are some links to what people thought years ago: [techradar.com...] and [nytimes.com...]

I'm not sure Google would risk losing all that ad revenue by encroaching on Amazon's turf. But who knows, Google has chased a lot of advertisers off their platform and is running out of advertisers to burn. Amazon may end up leaving too if Google starts burning them.

We had tried Buy on Google before they shut it down. It was a clunky and terrible platform which is why we didn't stay long. I honestly can't see Google building anything that could compete with Amazon nor can Google (or anyone else for that matter) compete with the billions in tax subsidies Amazon gets.

It's never clear what Google is doing, but what other reason could those weird filters on the left side of the page could be? It's exactly what you would find on an online store. Then again, it may just be another unfinished experiment that gets thrown in the bin. Google likes to do those.
