Thd WSJ is reporting that the U.S. Justice Department is readying to move towards starting a federal antitrust investigation into Google.

The exact focus of the Justice Department’s investigation is unclear. The department began work on the matter after brokering an agreement with the government’s other antitrust agency, the Federal Trade Commission, to take the lead on antitrust oversight of Google, according to the people familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deliberations are confidential.

We'll have to wait and see what happens. In the past these things have "started" and never gone anywhere.

I am sure that "Alphabet" anticipated this since a very long time, and is prepared ... so that, at the end nothing will really change :)

Now the US Congress are jumping in. Definitely a bad day for Google.

Looks like FTC, Justice, and Congress are all taking up investigations. Google (Alphabet, Search, Ad biz, YouTube), Facebook, Amazon ... all are up for investigation(s).

Whew!

For the record, it's now going beyond Google, as Tangor indicated, and Facebook, Apple, and Amazon are on the radar.

Many small streams make one big river, many big rivers make one big tsunami.

For the record, it's now going beyond...

It's okay, I am sure they all have backup plans, prepared since years, these high tech companies have the brightness engineers, hum... i mean, the brightness lawyers.

The icing on the cake is Google's restraint of trade - not allowing websites to link to each other. I'll make damn sure the DOJ knows about that little infraction.

Funny thing about tsunamis, only the most resourceful survive them. Hope all those summoning the tsunami are prepared for if/when it turns their way...

@Shepherd.. it can't get any worse. This might be the very thing that convinces venture capitalists to go ahead and fund competition. In the current climate, VC's are reluctant to pour $ into any search alternative startup because of Google's massive power in the form of lobbyists and lawyers. Only government can resolve this.

@cnvi ... search is not an income machine, never was. Can't see VC going there UNLESS there is an ad service attached to it (ala g).

Don't know about you but I've seen quite enough investigating by current gov where they claim they find things where none exist and ignore things in plain sight with many levels of evidence.

Google needs to check their bias. Their stock is down 2% and their execs are deleting their social profiles today for a reason.
