Seems like Symantec and Google are still going at it..

Is this the case of yet another company succumbing to Google or did Symantec actually do something that Google thinks was "evil"?

cnvi - Yes, I initially had the same thought. This story seemed like same old same old, and it turns out that that's because it is. Look carefully and you'll see that it's two years old. You have to look hard, though, because all of these tech blogs are abominable when it comes to displaying clear dates.

As for whether Symantec really did something bad... yes, they did. Symantec was repeatedly lax about how it handled certificates, endangering general web security.

If you simply want to knock Google, there's much more recent stuff that you could talk about.

With regard to the fallout from the Heartbleed bug, though, which is what the Symantec sloppiness was ultimately about, Google was in fact heroic in making sure the certificates were as represented.

PS: My above post about the Techcrunch article only. Sorry, I missed the Norton Community article entirely. I'd guess that if Google isn't supporting the Symantec toolbar, it's because they have good reason.

I trust Google over Symantec, hands down.

About a year ago Google announced [webmasterworld.com] that they would be removing trust for older Symantec certificates for Chrome browsers beginning with v.66 which seemed like a long way off back then. It was announced to allow sites plenty of time to upgrade to more secure certificates. Their previous announcement [webmasterworld.com] had more details that explain why Google saw that older encryption as insecure.
