A U.S. Judge has ordered Google to comply with search warrants and to hand over emails stored outside of the U.S.

Previously, Microsoft was faced with handing over e-mails, but it was ruled it could not be forced to reveal e-mails stored in Ireland.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Rueter in Philadelphia ruled on Friday that transferring emails from a foreign server so FBI agents could review them locally as part of a domestic fraud probe did not qualify as a seizure. Google Ordered to Hand Over Emails Stored Overseas [cnbc.com]
"Though the retrieval of the electronic data by Google from its multiple data centers abroad has the potential for an invasion of privacy, the actual infringement of privacy occurs at the time of disclosure in the United States," Rueter wrote.

It's analogous to extradition, isn't it? “Send this person back from Ireland so we can put them under trial.” I foresee a fruitful new area in international law.
