Google's commitment for self-driving cars is undoubted, and the boss of its division is claiming an objective of vehicles within five years.

I'm certain it's practical, but is it going to get the uptake.

Many of us must have travelled on, or at least seen the automated transport system that currently exist in places such as airports. These are acceptable to me because they are on dedicated circuits with no human or any other object likely to come in to contact with the vehicle. Driving on the roads is an entirely different proposition, imho.

The director of Google's self-drive car project has revealed his motivation for ensuring that the technology is standard on roads within five years.

Chris Urmson told delegates at the Ted (Technology, Entertainment and Design) conference that his eldest son was 11-years-old and due to take his driving test in "four and a half years".

"My team are committed to making sure that doesn't happen," he said. Google's Chris Urmson Says its Objective is for Self Driving Cars Within Five Years [bbc.co.uk]

The uptake can be easy to achieve with the right incentives. I imagine businesses will be the first to jump on this. Travelling saleforce can work while being transported to their next meeting. The increase in efficiency can be huge. As for consumers imagine if Google provided free car insurance for life when you buy this. Most car accidents are caused by user error. Self driving cars will eliminate that so Google could afford to offer free car insurance.

Biggest hurdle is going to get past local laws. There are some special interest groups that do not want to see self driving cars and they will push for restrictive laws. Police unions will not be happy because they lose revenue by no longer writing speeding tickets. Lawyers do not like this because it could remove drunk driving arrests.

...and this makes it to the news, the churnalists make a big deal of it, the goog gets free pr and everyone thinks the goog is the smartest, most inovative organization around, so naturally, their se must be the best. ...and yet, they still need to use focus groups to determine how their fake algo works.
