Google's latest project is a modular smartphone, project Ara.

The concept is a good one, and it'd be great to be able to fully customise a device in the future is interesting, even if this is just a project right now.

Would you want one?

Why is it a good one? I can't see this as anything but a novelty device.

I think phones have gotten so advanced, that they are no longer technological barriers to phone advancement. They are now just fashion statements.

The concept is good, being able to make your own specification, not this device.

I think it just locks you into long term platform. You buy the back plane and then keep buying upgrades because you can't get off the upgrade treadmill.

There are other modular systems coming out, too. I found one for an Internet of Things. I can see more practical sense in those than the phone.

A modular phone might be fun or useful for a niche audience (the kind of people who like to build their own computers, for example).

For most people, a "modular phone" is likely to mean a ready-to-use phone with a free skin or case.
