It's not the only organisation to do so, but when Google's name is mentioned it gets more attention.

Google Inc. (GOOG) Chairman Eric Schmidt said the world’s biggest Internet search company made a mistake in funding a political group that opposes U.S. action on climate change.

Schmidt said Google paid the American Legislative Exchange Council as part of a lobbying campaign on an unrelated issue. Without elaborating on Google’s relationship with the group, Schmidt said facts about global warming aren’t in dispute.

“The people who oppose it are really hurting our children and grandchildren and making the world a much worse place,” Schmidt said on NPR’s “Diane Rehm Show” yesterday. “We should not be aligned with such people. They are just literally lying.” Google Withdraws From ALEC, Says Link With Climate Skeptics Wrong [bloomberg.com]

Sometimes telling the truth is illegal. Sometimes it is dismissed as 'lies' by those with their own agendum.

I wonder how Google's ownership in solar power fields, that are killing birds in flight ( [webmasterworld.com...] ), factored into their decision to pull out of ALEC? Funding a coal loving organization while they own a portion of a green energy company is quite a conflict of interest.

I think Google felt the public pressure building against ALEC and felt the association was more of a liability than a benefit. ALEC isn't just about energy or climate change. ALEC is a right leaning organization that pushes an agenda that is pro-business. They fight against unions, regulations and taxation. I feel this was more a PR move.
