Google continues to gobble up companies that will form the backbone of its new social strategy and the upcoming war with Facebook. Last week it was Slide. And they are now buying Jambool and their Social Gold payment product, we’ve heard from multiple sources. The purchase price is $55 million plus another $15 million -$20 million in an earnout, say our sources.

buying doesn't get you closer to anything.
The purchases they make actually have to do something for them other then cost them money.

Google are certainly investing a hell of a lot of money into something that "might be" but does Facebook have a lot to worry about at this stage?
The last I heard Facebook where cash flow positive, but not profitable. Why is Google so keen to buy its way into the same situation. It appears there is more value to data than the dollar.

Another factor in the purchase could be simply to apply their expertise in adding more of an Adwords presence to these sites with significant traffic.

Google might be building a replacement to traditional search results. If they can get users to create enough information rich pages there would be no reason for anyone to want a list of 3rd party sites. Knol was a bust, this looks to be better.
Google couldn't be that, this might be. I doubt it, again nobody is asking for another dominating monopoly from Google.

It is not actually a lot of money for Goog. Anyone been keeping track of how much are they spent on social networking so far?
