The search giant has made a ton of product announcements this year, ranging from minor tweaks to major new applications. It even came out with a brand-new operating system. In doing so, Google left a lot of collateral damage. A lot of folks, from tiny startups with high-fallutin’ dreams to established industries, have found themselves in the path of the search behemoth.Who did Google make cry this year? We’re looking back at some of the dreams that were deferred we mean, destroyed!
Rupert Murdoch: Okay, the Australian media kingpin
The fink has been an American for a long time in order to expand his empire. Us Australians record no loss whatsoever.
His only redeeming feature according to his mum?
"He's good to his mother"
e.g.
- The navigation companies: Google changes the pricing model: they want you to buy net.access (which is very expensive when abroad!) with a free app and "free" data. While the older companies sell the application (optionally a device) and the data without a need to be online.
This is not killing the navigation software companies by giving your solution away fro free. This is a competing offer with an alternative pricing structure.
(one I'm avoiding as well, as the total costs are far greater).
- Rupert Murdoch: those in the business of selling dead trees for distributing news are in trouble not with Google, but with a changing audience that's not willing to buy their dead trees anymore. The safe can be seen with e.g. kindle downloads outselling physical books over at amazon, with the music industry, ...
Google is a part of the solution the masses are choosing as an alternative.
What's wrong with providign people waht they want if you can legally do so.
- bitly: seems like they get loads of love from twitter, and they pushed out competitors too. Don't see anything wrong here.
But well Google being evil matches with the style of bashing Google, what seems like a very disturbing anti-google campaign run by some members here and elsewhere. A pity that they feel the need to use bogus arguments to do their own evil in trying to find faults in Google.
Incursions into each other territory will dilute what they both do best and invariably will result in failure. What they both do best will sustain until the next " watershed" invention.
However , Google cannot exist without friends. Some of those friends , may become slaves though ie absorbed under the wing of information dissemination via search . Google Search has a very strong core value proposition.
I'd argue that Google didn't destroy any business. Lack of insight and ability self destroyed the 9 failures.
Wave? Tried it, didn't get it. I had no one I knew on it either, so what was the point again?
Bit.ly? I made my own URL shortener with an open source script. Thanks pageoneresults and the del.icio.us guy for writing compelling reasons why I should have.
The others? Meh. I might turn my netbook into a googleOS system, but the reality is I downloaded it a month ago and haven't done it yet so I probably won't.
Google cannot exist without friends
with them going into every digital industry they have no friends, they just can't NOT screw with anyone cause they think they are better.
Google CEO Eric Schmidt said in September that the search leader will buy up one company a month in 2010. Here's a look at some of the leading contenders.
will anything be left not owned by google in 2011?
Google essentially wants the hard labors of any professional journalist for free
Is rewriting press releases and government announcements such hard work? Its not as if journalists do any fact checking, investigation or worthwhile analysis these days.
Even if 95 % of all newspapers refuse to let themselves be indexed the other 5% can crack the dam
Which proces they have no unique content worth paying for. Sites like the FT and the New Scientist do get people to pay because the content is worth it.
What type of journalism do you expect from Adsense sites and blogs.
The blogs I read are better than the newspapers I used to read.
Is rewriting press releases and government announcements such hard work? Its not as if journalists do any fact checking, investigation or worthwhile analysis these days.
Are you using the mere existence of examples of bad work to justify the destruction of *all* journalistic work, good and bad?
Some people simply write down what's being said at press conferences. Those people are not really journalists, they are recording machines. Is every journalist like that? No. Will every journalist be laid off after AdSense "newspapers" take over? Yes.
The kind of writing and research we should brace for is 500-word "articles" produced at $5 a piece in south-east Asia by people who describe themselves in their resumes as a "professional editor having many experiences writing for reputed companies" (this is not an exaggeration).
Although I see a lot of sellers on ebay are hoping that a company with the finances of Google will make an online auction site !
I personally don't like the way that Google are trying to make an OS and a browser. They will have just too many apps.
They should stick to search and make it better.
I think Google should focus on what they're good at and not try to put so many small companies out of business by taking over / buying out everything in site.
