The youtube logo has changed for me. It now has a caption that reads "1 billion views per day!"

Seams like Google wants everyone to know.

A bilion views a day. In terms of bandwidth this is difficult to comprehend. Wonder what Youtube's monthly bandwidth costs?

I worked out their bandwidth about 18 months ago when some figures were given.

It came to 97gb per second.

I wonder how this compares to Apple/iTunes and Microsoft Xboxlive/Zune as well as Netflix. Netflix has to be pushing out some serious bandwidth :) Zune will soon with 1080p instant on as well

It's not such a big deal when you're making a profit though. Google needs to find a way to monetize YouTube or else it just isn't worth it.

I wonder if closing the popup ads in the videos counts as a click? Something to think about.

it becomes 5820 GB (97 GB x 60 seconds) per minute = (5820 GB) 5.6 Terabyte per minute
5.6 TB x 60 minutes = 336 TB per day
336 TB x 30 days = 10080 TB a month

Figures indicates 18 months back... that should be tripled now for sure ?

definetly makes sense.

I think YouTube has to be biggest bandwidth user out there, who else are the mega users? I think Windows update has to be up there.

If Google with Youtube has to be able to monetise it, and Facebook is only just now cash positive and Newspapers cant make money online.....
This does not look good for them does it. Where is all the money gonna come from ? (and I didnt mention Myspace.)

Any music & video streaming portals like Grooveshark, Break, Onion, et al would be heavy bandwidth users, but I doubt any of them come close to youtube. Facebook and MySpace are likely in the top echelon of bandwidth consumers. Yahoo, too.

77gb per second. It had gone up to 97gb per second a year and a half ago, so I imagine it's somewhere in the 150gb per second area now. Another article suggests YT usage is 10% of internet traffic.

The higher definition videos will also add to that bandwidth amount in comparison to older measurements.

Yesterday I had a talk with my wife about Youtube because she doesn't understand where the logic is in the online video business.

- If the better you do, the more money you lose, there's something wrong.
- If every time you make a competitor bit the dust, you feed your negative cash-flow, why anyone want to be the number one?

I just think only big companies can do big mistakes like this. If it does not touch your core business, you can survive; Lehman Brothers, in example, made stupid decissions regarding its core business and you now how it ended.

so how long will google keep throwing money down the youtube hole?

youtube might be less of a hole if easier to add advertising to channels - I suspect it's a bit tough as can be loads of copyright carelessness/infringement

Yes I don't get Google with Youtube.
I do find Youtube great for looking for tutorials on many subjects.
But as for why they keep paying for it to run ?
And if Google cant monetise it - who could ?

Branding maybe so think: Is $470 Million (in losses) worth 1b views per day?
