Last year we asked a small group of academics about ways to advance network research and provide users with tools to test their broadband connections. Today Google, the New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute, the PlanetLab Consortium, and academic researchers are taking the wraps off of Measurement Lab (M-Lab), an open platform that researchers can use to deploy Internet measurement tools.

Internet traffic will initially be analyzed at data centers in 12 locations in Europe and the United States on 36 computer servers provided by Google, in an effort that has already begun operating and which was to expand throughout early 2009.

@signor_john & mcavic - those were interesting days to be online - back then (well about 14 years ago) we had an ISDN line to the Internet and not all that much was out there yet. Most people would simply look at you with "deer in the headlights" expressions if you uttered the word Internet. I remember putting bind 4x versions on NT 3.5 servers that were 486 based processor machines during those days.
My how times have changed.
