From the Times Online today:

An Indian Court has been called to ban Google Earth amid suggestions the online satellite imaging was used to help plan the terror attacks that killed more than 170 people in Mumbai last month.

A petition entered at the Bombay High Court alleges that the Google Earth service, "aids terrorists in plotting attacks". Advocate Amit Karkhanis has urged the court to direct Google to blur images of sensitive areas in the country until the case is decided.

There are indications that the gunmen who stormed Mumbai on November 26, and the people trained them, were technically literate. The group appears to have used complex GPS systems to navigate their way to Mumbai by sea. They communicated by satellite phone, used mobile phones with several different SIM cards, and may have monitored events as the siege unfolded via handheld Blackberry web browsers.

Faheem Ahmed Ansari, a suspected militant who was arrested in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in February, said he was shown maps of Indian locations on Google Earth by members of Lashkar-e-Taiber

Then how come they're not suing the GPS manufacturers?

WebmasterWorld should be banned as it helped a terror cell build a website that they used to communicate and co-ordinate an attack.
with several different SIM cards, and may have monitored events as the siege unfolded via handheld Blackberry web browsers.

Further, it is clear that SIM cards, phones that use them and indeed Blackberrys (Blackberries?) should be banned immediately.

And this interweb thingy must be causing problems too.

Yikes! Too much Western influence over there in India. ;)

Maybe we can take members of that Indian Court down to our local mall here in Southern California. I'll take them to that little spy store that has all this really neat stuff that you can purchase over the counter. Some of it surely high tech enough to have aided in something of this nature.

Or maybe we can even direct them to Indian Affiliates who sell this type of stuff by the boat load? If we were to sit here and piece together all the faults along the way, Google is just one part of the challenge.

An ounce of prevention would have been in order.

Why not ban printed road maps and street maps, too? (Not to mention sites like Mapquest.) Keep terrorists confused, and maybe they'll stay down on the farm instead of trying to find their way to Paree or Mumbai.

I live in a country with a very paranoid leader.

On our site we had a Google Earth image of the cruise ship port to show people where to go for their tour p/u's.

I received an e-mail from the military port captain telling me to remove it immediately for "security reasons".

It did no good to point out to him that this would not prevent any other person from using GE to get the same info.

He replied that while he knew about the "infamous" Google product I was to remove it immediately or face arrest.

I was tempted to push the issue just to make him look ridiculous publicly however my wife talked me out of it.

I removed it & replaced it with an identical hand drawn one.

yes just ban internet altogether and computers too, why not going back to the stone age and have a fresh start?
