Google To Let Users Create Own Maps

Google is out to make map-making simpler, giving away tools for ordinary users to pinpoint locations, draw routes and attach photos or video to existing online maps, the company said on Wednesday.
The Web search leader, which set off an explosion of creative map-making among professional programmers after introducing Google Maps two years ago, is now offering MyMaps, tools for everyday users to create maps in a few mouse clicks.

The tool is great! I was wondering if there's a way we can use it with Maps-API keys. Like you register for a key to use maps on your domain and then the tool to populate it.

Straight up.

I'd be very keen if Google launched a Google MyMaps for Webmasters with an option to promote the tool through a jointly branded label.

I love it. I still think Gmaps is the Googles best product to date.

open IE6
Find a page that has a Google map on it. Load it.
Then press the "Back" button.

does anyone else see a javascript error?

it's happening in IE6, but not IE7 or MozFox

Seems to be about the same as what Ask Maps offered back in December. Difference is, Google has a giant user base in comparison, and (probably) more interesting hardware issues in keeping it going.

I have to agree, Maps (from Google, Ask, MSN, and Yahoo - in that order) is the best tool I've seen come available, and the one that gets me the most excited (and the one that I use to surf "the world" when I'm bored). With that in mind, I hope it's always as free, available, and easy to use as it is now.

By the way, about a month ago, Ask added a subsequent new feature: draw a shape, and it'll let you search within that shape. Can Google's upgrades do this?

Learning Curve

Watch out!

Before you spend too much time on it realize that you can only get max 50 items (markers, lines and shapes) on a map page.

I just spent my Easter drawing up a terrific map with 58 shapes to define the 58 areas.

But dang! I couldn't figure out where the hell the last 8 items disappeared to. It turns out they are on page 2!

That ain't gonna work. That's like having a map of the United States with 40 states on page one and 10 states on page two.
