CNet has the goods - 10 pages of inside photos:

Following a year of speculation, Google has finally opened its new office in the Big Apple at 111 Eighth Ave., in the heart of the Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan, New York.

Google will occupy about 300,000 square feet on three floors of the building. Built in 1932 for the New York Port Authority, [it] is the second-largest building in Manhattan in terms of square footage.

I dunno. I think *three* lava lamps is a bit much. :)

On a more serious note, read the following and then ponder how wise it is to put a bunch of people in this building:

Smart? Not exactly sure now...it could actually be a target.
"...But I suspect this statement, which I am told is true, is true, that if you blew up 60 Hudson Street and 111 Eighth Avenue, we could not communicate via fiber optic with Europe."

Is Google housing a datacenter there or just workers? Unless they're housing a major DC there I don't see how this is a benefit...they can get internet connection for 500 people even in Smalltown, Idaho

But I suspect this statement,

That report was written in 2002. Since then, there has been both an effort to diversivy communication routes, as well as quite a bit of the financial infrustructure moving out of lower Manhattan.

(Besides being national and international communication portals, these two locations serve the communication needs of the financial industry. At least pre-2001, MOST data circuits in lower Manhattan terminated or passed through one or the other of these buildings.)
