“The only reason that you hear anything about ‘wireless fidelity’ is some of my colleagues in the group were afraid. They didn’t understand branding or marketing. They could not imagine using the name ‘Wi-Fi’ without having some sort of literal explanation,”

Have to admit I always thought it was "Wireless Fidelity". What I find disturbing these days is that a lot of younger people have dropped the term internet connection altogether and just call that WIFI.

In view of observations posted upthread, I was gratified to learn that it actually stands for [abbreviations.com] Wireless Telecommunications Facility. Though I admit World Tiddlywinks Federation has a certain charm.
I’m told there have occasionally been severe misunderstandings when people’s grandparents thought LOL stood for Lots Of Love, and inserted it into communications involving some recent tragedy.

I was at a conference somewhere that was also hosting a conference attended by members of the Wisconsin Tourism Federation, with a large WTF sign (I still have the picture I took somewhere...). Apparently, I wasn't the only one who saw the humor in it and they have since changed their name [cnet.com].

So, it's just WiFi, ok, got it. I never understood the "Fidelity" part of it from the beginning. I feel greatly enriched having had this explained. :)
Could you say that it was a mythunderstanding?

Me too. My kids know better though!
I tend to say things like "yes you can use my wifi, but not the internet connection". Maybe I should actually configure it so I can do that to confuse visitors. Need to look at router docs....
