"Warranty Void if Removed" Stickers May Be Illegal in U.S.

We've all see those stickers on products saying, "warranty void if removed." According to the F.T.C. it has communicated with six companies over this and they have 30-days to respond. It seems the F.T.C. thinks it is misleading, and may be illegal.
It's locking consumers into specific providers to retain full warranty.

"Provisions that tie warranty coverage to the use of particular products or services harm both consumers who pay more for them as well as the small businesses who offer competing products and services," said the FTC's Thomas Pahl. Remember the tags on mattresses and upholstered furniture that say “not to be removed except by the consumer”? As a child I got yelled at for starting to cut one off. For years afterward, I thought the unfamiliar word “consumer” meant something about final waste-disposal, like a wrecking yard for couches.

I think this sticker is also to prevent someone from opening a device and damage the inside and then claim the warranty to get it replaced.

I got the picture that it isn't so much about removing the labels as the labels' wording that limits consumers' service options that they're questioning.

Yet one more solution looking for a problem. I build something I guarantee it, as long as somebody else doesn't muck about with the guts and get it all wrong. At that point it's their problem, not mine.
