It was close last month [webmasterworld.com], but this month, Android has surpassed Microsoft's Windows operating system to become the World's most popular.

The end of an era in some respects.

We know that Windows OS still dominates the desktop sector, but now that mobile is becoming the tech in everyone's hand, android has become the most popular.

February 2017
Windows 38.6%
Android 37.4%

March 2017
Android at 37.93%
Windows at 37.91%

I don't want to see percentages. I want to see total numbers. It isn't that people are throwing away their Windows desktops
:: pause to enjoy mental picture ::
it is that Androids are being additionally acquired, both by people who already have desktops and--far more importantly--by people who previously had nothing. Er, people who previously used no OS of any kind.

Android is my favorite OS. Fast, clean, never a problem.

I have a phone & a tablet using Android.

I have a computer & a Surface Pro 4 using Windows 10.

I have absolutely nothing with iOS :)

the worlds most popular OS is given away for free on every cellphone pushed on you....what this is headline breaking news? lol

windows is production hardware, android is any person with a pulse.

I wish cell phones were "pushed" on me... so far I've had to go buy every one.

Yeah, it's amazing what a free OS can do. Part of the reason for the uptake is the demand for mobile, and Android was just the right technology at the right at the time.
Microsoft were late to the party when the race was already won.

Had an Android notebook for a while.
Lightening fast, great HD display. Got rid of it because of the limited full-process software available. That's when I got the Surface Pro 4 (which is fantastic, but expensive.)

Yeah, I would have liked a Surface device, but it was well over my budget. I ended up with an HP laptop with SSD. It was lightweight, reasonable on battery, and had decent performance from the i7 processor. All great for work.
I also use an android tablet as it's more a casual device for watching movies, general e-mail (not work) and web browsing.

My surface has the i7 & 16GB RAM with1TB SSD. I back-up data a lot and image the system a lot too. The larger the SSD, the more prone to crash (so I hear) and it gets pretty hot if I run a lot of processes back to back.

My phone came with Android 7 (the latest) and it did an OS update last month. I really like it. Has lots of features the last vr didn't have. What I like about Android is the stability... although it has never managed cache very well. I've always restarted my Android phones at least once a day to keep things running smoothly.

so far I've had to go buy every one.

The only reason I have a cell phone at all is that a friend insisted on giving me her old Android when she bought a bigger one. The phone part--which I rarely use--is prepaid; I mainly use it for listening to music on WiFi while walking the cat. That's not a replacement of some previous function, but a new function that did not exist before. And that's why I talk about numbers rather than percentages.

OS in my house, 5 years ago: 100% Mac OS
OS in my house, 3 years ago: 50% Mac OS, 50% iOS
OS in my house, 1 year ago: 33% Mac OS, 33% iOS, 33% Android

Same here, same number of MS machines in the house as before but additional devices are Android.

how soon till android takes over desktops?
I think the bigger question may be "how long will desktops be around outside of the workplace?"

The trend for cloud storage, stream media, social media immersion and mobile apps-for-everything keeps moving us away from the need to use a bulky, immobile desktop computer at all.

outside of the workplace

It all depends on how you interpret "work" doesn't it. You can passively view things on any device, sure. Read posts, watch movies, visit websites. But can you do detailed graphics on a touchscreen? Posting to message boards is hell if your device doesn't have a full keyboard. (Thanks to my computer's visit to the shop earlier this year, I know this all too well.)

Everything is fine as long as you're just taking in content that other people have created. But that, I guess, is a different thread.

I'm referring to the average internet user... not us freaks.

All of my family and friends use a desk top when they are at home, for pleasure, rather than business.... Me too.

Can't see that changing any time soon.

Gotta laugh! Statcounter is easily the most fooled analytic tool... Clear cache it counts it as a new hit, randomise user agent and clear cache, another new hit, randomise ip clear cache, clear user agent and roll it out again via a macro. Anyway who uses statcounter ..............

We've only added one Android device in the past year, a replacement for an iPhone, but we have added several more Lumia Windows phone plus several Acer Switch 10Vs running Windows 10 and what an awesome little machine they are for road warriors, and on returning to the office plugging them into 27" HD monitors is easy.

They were bought at a very heavily discounted rate.

Fake News If I ever saw any. The stats are not even based on scientific statistical significance standards (six-sigma 6σ), they are falsely presented at percentage graphs where decline is measured in "market share" rather than volume and on global internet usage compared to hardware that runs machines. This is a way for Google to pat their own back, through a "unbiased" but heavily swayed by them venue.

I mean yeah, for a B-rated blog outlets that want to grab some social media and forum referrals, this works OK, but seriously this is BS article.

Why limit "operating systems" to "desktop" or "mobile"? What about cars, or microwave ovens? Does anyone even know how the total OS numbers stack up when you get beyond PCs and phones?

What about cars, or microwave ovens?

Your microwave has internet access? I'm envious.

Given the name of this forum, it is reasonable to assume that “OS” is shorthand for “OS that allows humans* to view online content”. And then the discussion proceeds from there.

* For present purposes, a botrunner counts as a human.

How does this compare to that os list from the federal government? Can't remember the link or name or I'd look it up myself.

walk into carrier store, give no #*$!s about what phone you get, bam free subsidized phone. If you wanna get picky and get the best one, yea you pay... but hell some are even giving iphone7s away for free now with a contract.

no clue what rock you live under.
