What do you do with old software on CD?

I'm having a clearout and found quite a few CDs of old software. I have no further need for the software as most of it is out of date.

I looked on auction sites and people are trying to sell it, but it's not being bought, so I don't really want to waste time and effort on taking that route.

What do you do with the the old software and the disks?

Landfill seems like an ugly option right now.

Probably not useful to a lot of people, but locally, we hang one or two on the fruit trees to discourage birds that like to sample fruit. Shiny... folks say the moving reflection scares them off. :)

haha, AOL, yeah.

I've got a mountain of those at the garden allotment to scare off the birds. That works, but the mice don't seem discouraged by AOL disks. ;)

Heh. I remember asking about this once-- can't now remember if it was here or in another venue. Someone said to go to the hardware store and buy shellac-coating stuff and use all the old disks (I think I was actually asking about old floppies) to retile my bathroom.

OK, another idea - line an old satellite dish with them and make yourself a solar oven. Might need to use a little blowtorch help to get a good fit. Some contact cement and voila!

Then if you decide your pizza doesn't cook evenly, you could mount it on a pedestal for a passive thermal birdbath.

I used to use the AOL discs as coasters.

I used to use them as coasters as well, I superglued a few together. Then I started making stacks of them, glueing loads together.

Now I can't be bothered so I cut them up and put them in the rubbish !

Seriously , if they are not AOL etc I do have a quick look, jut in case there's something on them still interesting, before I bin them.

AOL just sat around and watched as other companies dug lines to their customers........talk about people that watched the world evolve and did nothing but let it kill them.

They're better than empty paint cans for making ad hoc shelves in the garage.

A couple of steel rods as axles makes 4 glued stacks of them useful as wheels, for storing stuff out of the way 'at the back' of wide/deep work surfaces.

Yeah, I can think of uses for the disks, and the bird scarer is probably the most practical. That'll use up a few.

It was really about the software that's on the disks. I decided that there is no use for the software and will treat it as a disk to be destroyed.
