Since I moved to London in 2000, I have never felt the need to have a car. Or a bike to be honest. I had a bike when I lived in Japan. I haven't had my own car to drive since September 1995.

A red ( slightly faded ) 1995 Ford Mustang GT.

Why?

Because it's been paid-off for years, and it's nice not having a car payment. ( rather spend that money on stuff that's going to make me more money, not lose it again with depreciation).

I plan to drive it until it stops working, or costs more to fix than the car's worth... then I'll walk ;)

What: bicycle

Why: State of New Jersey is holding my Drivers License "hostage." State Government keeps demanding I contribute to their art collection of dead presidents. No Deal! (Besides, I live in Florida now)

04 Subaru Impreza Wagon - Relatively small but the wagon part makes it much more practical for bikes, skis, etc..., AWD is great in any amount of snow, was fairly cheap & could pay cash for it, decent mileage. Subaru credit card rewards pay for everything on it. Insurance on it is around $2,000/yr. :( Should have checked that before buying.

A Porsche convertible......why....simple, it makes me smile, and it actually brings a smile to most of the people I meet as well!

It is a totally impractical car for hauling stuff, you need to keep an alternative ride for those jobs.

But, when you want to get out on the open roads in the Florida Sunshine you can't beat a convertible, especially a fast one :)

because someone died and I got a shot at it

it's a classic old lady car, barely driven in it's 111 years, engine is spotless, except for some dust

it's practical and will last forever, and there's room in the back for my daughter and some room for her next sibling, when that might happen

2 Litre Ford Mondeo.

Why? Its like a small van with seats down, im 6'2 and 19 stone id look really stupid driving something smaller, besides it has air con a decent CD player.

Once looked into buying a Lotus sports car thing was so small I couldnt get in the drivers seat, I could only get out of the passengers seat with the roof off!

98 Chevy Blazer - because my parents gave it to me for free after taking it away from my sister because she ran away from home

Every day - Prodrive Subaru WRX Imprezza Sportwagon, upgraded suspension, brakes and engine. Goes like a rocket, and there's room for the dog and shopping.

High days and holidays - Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, the original 3 door with a tea tray for a spoiler. Had it for 20 years, and I still smile every time I drive it.

'96 Ford F-150, 195,000 miles. Costs almost nothing to insure. I'm fortunate to have a good, unquestionably HONEST mechanic that I use to keep it in tip-top shape maintenance-wise. Looks like a junker, but wouldn't even think about selling it. Company relocated 40 miles away, so negotiated that company pays fuel receipts. VERY unhappy about the weekly mileage and extra wear and tear - I'm still on the short side of that deal, but I'm hoping to get another 200,000 miles out of it with only modest maintenance expenses.

Lotus Elise - it's the proper version of the vx220 :P

Mines a 2006 Mercedes Coupe.....contract hire soley from the proceeds of one website.

New vehicles come with payments (Unless you've got cash; I'm not doing that well:)), plus steep insurance. In the long run, the savings represent a big chunk of nice house. Every cheap mile I get out of the 'banger' goes straight to equity.

I drive a porsche carerra 4 coupe. In fact I just drove it from Prague to Warsaw and oh what fun that was. The reason why is because when I looked at all the car magazines people gave these cars top marks for everything. They were right, absolutely amazing machines!

Also have a BMW 330ci coupe that I could not be bothered to get rid of and use it now and then. Great car and a comfy ride with a lot more bells and whistles than the porsche but out of the 2 I take the porsche almost every time.

Ah..... but Lawman, they come exclusively out of websites and not lawyers fees - gave it up - and they definitely dont deserve a separate thread. Zero capital input, almost fully tax deductible, perhaps some of our banger drivers should look at leasing or contract hire, which even the most disadvantaged webmasters could probably afford given that theres usually no capital requirement. If they pay tax it makes a lot of sense, and no leasing/contract hire is not part of my game.

why: It is THE most fun in the city. I actually overtook a Jaguar convertible recently, thinking, nice car, when I saw the occupant actually was an acquaintance of mine - boy did he try hard to hide his true feelings, when I waved hello :)

I get execrise every day, never go to the gym, get a good counterpont for sitting in front of this bloody machine all day long!

86 BMW 325e - when I need/can run errands by myself. Relatively fun to drive and good on gas mileage. I also know the car very well and do all maintenance / repairs myself

87 BMW 325is - track car. Relatively inexpensive as race cars go...

84 Jeep CJ7 - was my car during college. Drinks gas like there is no tomorrow. Currently is apart (and I mean every single nut and bolt) awaiting rebuild. It's very fun to drive though

Smart people......I see over 40% of them have Porsches!

Not practical for all purposes, you do need to keep a second car! But, if 40%+ of them own a Porsche for fun, they can't be a bad buy :)

Why: Contract worker doing lots of motorway miles. Like quiet, smooth-ride cars with some creature comforts.

I had a Audi A4 before and my next car will be one again.... love that car!
