Ah yes,, my home state of Pennsylvania.

Route 895

We've all see deer carcasses on the highway. I mean how can you not see them? Well in 1996, PennDOT workers didn't when they paved over one in Schuylkill County. State transportation engineer for PennDOT District 5, Walter Bortree, said that it was a department crew, and not a contractor, that made the goof. "Yes, the operator should have seen the deer, and yes, it should have been removed. It should not have occurred. We made a mistake"

Oh, that wacky PennDot! As a fellow Pennsylvanian, I am not in the least bit surprised. I mean, what with the never ending construction on 90 and 79, the crews are probably a bit weary and so, if they pave over a deer, we should probably cut them some slack.

If they were that smart, how do they know it was dead when they paved over it?

mmmm.. paved venison

Wait.. "Schuylkill County"? Isn't "Schuyl" the local Native American word for "road?"

Reminds me of that picture of a dead skunk with the yellow center lines painted over it that circulated around by e-mail a couple years ago...

[Insofar as] any government project is concerned, these guys have no incentive to offer great service, because they can't go out of business.

Yea, if it were unintentional. I expect it was laziness like all of the debris I shred on my riding mower because I'm too stubborn to to get off and remove it; for $2000, I demand a 100% ride. I've never seen a paver leave his seat either...

State DOT road crew gets out on site and discovers they left the shovels back at the work shed. One of the workers radios in and asks that someone bring shovels. Upon being told that it might be an hour or so, the worker said, "that's alright, we'll just lean on each other 'til they get here."

Nice to see that there is the same level of quality in road workers all over the country...

I think it's international ...

Mind you, paving over an elephant would create one almighty speed bump.

The statement missed the important information.... what was done to the inept staff by way of discipline and recouping costs, and what was done to ensure such a thing doesn't happen again...

I like that commercial where 3 yuppies in an office who are doing nothing criticizing the 3 workers outside for doing nothing.

"They's never make it in the corporate world".

Very Funny Lawman.

reminds me a piece of road from teh M11 through to Saffron Walen in Essex, recently resurfaced but Ill be blown if I ever went past and saw them all working.

They even had two men, one at each end turning a stop and go sign. Now why couldnt that have been a light on a generator? I bet that cost a fortune to employ those two.
