Facebook is, once again, making changes to the newsfeed to show more local news, Mark Zuckerberg said, "Today our next update is to promote news from local sources." It's currently in the U.S. and FB plans to roll it out to other markets throughout 2018.
We identify local publishers as those whose links are clicked on by readers in a tight geographic area. If a story is from a publisher in your area, and you either follow the publisher’s Page or your friend shares a story from that outlet, it might show up higher in News Feed.Facebook Newsfeed to Prioritize More Local News [newsroom.fb.com]

good news for publishers.
Google/Facebook muscling into their industry is good news? Most local newspapers/offline publishers are already having trouble figuring out how to do online- this will most likely hurt a lot of them even more.

In some cases, it may give them some more traffic. But a lot of what I have seen is people click on the FB link to go to the site, read the article, then don't stick around to click on ads or read other stories.
