There was a time when "keywords in a domain name" were helpful, useful, or had value. Then, that bit of a SEO "lift" was, at least in part, talked to death - as in "If you don't STFU G's search engineers will notice and kill this effect". And so it goes.

I've never lost confidence in the utility of certain keyword domains, one's that I would call "industry defining domains". At this moment I won't lay out the details of that thought since I'm sure you're all savvy enough to grasp them.

That said, at this point in the evolution of "all things internet . . Web . . apps . . streaming . . cellular . . digital . . AI . . " what role do you see for domain names in discovery, branding, marketing / advertising, etc?

Is the day of the domain name ending or will the role role of domain names, in all their ever evolving permutations, persist ad infinitum and therefore their role will always need to be carefully considered?

Have you or someone or some entity you are familiar with recently employed / deployed a domain name to their advantage?

Go ahead and reference a specific, recently developed domain as an example, IFF it's a domain-website that is developed, functioning, AND it is showing signs of significant growth and success.

(If you're a noob (<10 posts) be advised that link drops and posts that don't add real value will be removed.)

Do domain names contribute to online or digital success in 2024 and, if so, how so?

My POV?

Hotels.com works nicely.

I never forget the address (despite my aging brain), which leads me to routinely check their website and/or app when planning travel.

A domain name is what you make of it.

Gibberish often works, keyword stuffed---not like it used to.

A Domain name is a SMALL part of the ranking equation. Work on the whole, not magic bullets.

That said, choose a good name, test it (NOT IN PUBLIC!), and go from there.

I think they will have value for another 10 years at least. Obviously, a website is still a thing, but many pairs of eyeballs exist only inside the click and swipe world of small screen apps. Same for email, it uses domain names, but many of the youngest IP users never use email -- a screen name at a given social media platform gets the message across.

I've seen many newcomers open up shop, create a presence, get their message out, or whatever they are trying to do "online" without ever using a domain name. Social media, online marketplaces, SaaS offerings, etc, all make it possible to exist on the web without every registering, configuring and connecting a domain name to anything.

My best guess is the domain-less world of "swipe-n-clickers" will take over and domain names will only be used for branding, vanity and technical reasons. In the future past they will write that domain names were just "a level of abstraction" added so non-geeks could hook up to the internet.

Domain names remain crucial for branding, trust, and discoverability, especially industry-defining or keyword-rich domains. However, SEO impact has lessened, and newer marketing channels also play a key role. <snip> could be helpful for securing valuable domain names in this evolving landscape.

Are domain names still relevant or important, and how so?

Yes, they are relevant right now, and for a long while yet.

However, their value will diminish, and has been diminishing, for a while now.

One of the great things about a domain name is exactly that; it's a domain, a home, a location, a centre.

People have become familiar using domains, and use it to find the brand or service through direct type-ins, or voice.

Of course, domains are also used for email, and at the moment, no new way to email a business or service is available. For example: emailing a major utility company at 123utilitycompanyname@ gmail looks pretty dodgy.

The role of the domain name in search is the one that's evolving: The days of ten-blue-links are long gone. What appears to be coming is search is an answer engine. Anyone remember Ask Jeeves? It was way ahead of its time, but didn't have the technology to support its ambitions. Today, the technology exists.

What to the future: Your guess is as good as anyone.
I'd ditch (already have) all domains that are not doing anything. If it's branding, has a website, or email, i'd keep it, and use it.

The usual array of wise and insightful answers and analysis.

Yes, I do miss the days of long threads, full of insights, opposing and opposing POV.

I belong to a generation for whom websites were the very definition of "the internet", i.e., digital interactions by "the old name".

As far as I can see "my generation" (oldies but goodies) is still comfortable with domain name based utilities, a/k/a websites, so I continue to play in the space.

As far as little me is concerned this thing I got involved in in the late 90s still has enough life in it that it will probably continue to provide a supplemental income . . and something fun / interesting to do and/or participate in in my dotage. :)
