I started receiving spam texts to the phone number listed in my domain registration (whois) data. This started maybe this year, only maybe 3 or 4 times so far.

I just logged into my account at namecheap to check on my registration data and change all my contact phone info. I do have whois privacy turned on but I notice that whois privacy does not seem to be an option for my two .US domains. That's one issue.

The other issue is that when I try to change just the contact phone (administrative, billing, registrant, doesn't matter) I get this error:

Authorization error. Authorization error. You must be the sponsor of the object to perform this operation.

No idea what that means or how to get around it. Thought I'd ask here before trying a support chat.

But the idea of not having the option of domain whois privacy for .US domains - is that true?

As to your last question, this: [about.us ]

Short answer, meh . . it's a 10 page explanation regarding privacy protection. I scanned it quickly. Maybe no PP for you. Maybe some PP for others. Maybe (likely) no PP for most.

And then there's this:
"No registrar, nor any of its resellers, affiliates, partners and/or contractors shall be permitted to offer anonymous or proxy domain name registration services which prevent the Registry from having and displaying the true and accurate data elements contained in Section 3.3 for any Registered Name." (http://www.neustar.us/us-privacy-statement-v-2/)

But . . there's 10 pages . . and some verbiage about exceptions. Read it if you're having trouble sleeping.

Not sure about the error message. Never seen it. Might evidence a form of system "locking", attributable to what I do not know. Time to call tech support. Could be on the registrar's end, i.e., not your end. I'd also check the FAQs regarding security / securing your domains to be certain you haven't missed something, i.e., a security setting applied to your domains, a procedure, a specific webform that must be used.

Not sure if you can but did you try changing a single phone #, say for the Technical Contact?

I tried changing just the last 2 digits of phone number of one of the contacts (maybe not the technical contact) and got that error. I tried that for both of the .US domains and got that error. Changing the phone number for any of my other domains (com, net, org) was no problem.

"You must be the sponsor of the object to perform this operation"

According to the lingo of the .US domain specifications, does it mention or define what a "sponsor" is?

Unsure, but if you're not a U.S. citizen or don't own/operate a licensed U.S. business . . maybe . . I'd look into that. I wonder if a non-U.S. phone or I.P. address outside the U.S. could be acting as a trigger. #WildSpeculationHere
