Hi engan. Welcome to WebmasterWorld.

Of course you could start by querying a search engine for "domain" or "domaining" + "guide" or "book" or "ebook", etc. If you do you will get lots results, most that read like low grade spammy self-promotional crap. Ugh. So we're not going there.

I'm sure there's a few guides or ebooks that are better than others but is reading an ebook really the way to go if you are serious about this business? Honestly, I don't think so, but it may be a start for a total noob. The problem is, by taking it all in - the domaining business - from a single man or woman's perspective - you may start off with some skewed ideas or serious misinformation. I say it's better to take a sampling of a wide variety of sources if you intend to play a serious domain game.

I've been in the business for a decade and I've yet to read a domaining ebook or any other book about domaining or "the business". I know such books are out there and I guess I could write such a book if I wanted.

Why haven't I read such books? Let me count the ways:

  • Unless they're free I wouldn't bother since everything you need to know is freely available online. See, for example, the Domain Forum Library [webmasterworld.com]
  • If you want some depth or detail about the industry then read back "issues" of Ron Jackson's DNJournal.com. Ron is a serious journalist. His industry profiles and event coverage are there best there is.
  • Most domain name forums have libraries or "pinned threads" that cover the domaining basics pretty well.
  • This industry is, like most, fluid so if you are going to play the game your best bet as a new or old player is to keep an eye on the major domain forums for significant breaking news.
  • Unless you are a first mover in any industry the easy money is not there to be had. So instead of reading an ebook - which anyone and everyone can have access to - when dealing with a "mature industry" it's often a better idea to seek out your own niche and develop or employ your own special knowledge in order to gain a competitive advantage.

Engan, if one of the old war horse members of WebmasterWorld cares to add their opinion about a particular domaining ebook I'm okay with that but . . if another noob were to appear to tout an ebook . . well . . I'd view that as a likely 1-2 promotional set up. I'm allowing this thread to run since it's a topic we haven't covered. In large measure it's a topic we haven't covered because of the minimum value of the proposition: Can an ebook teach me the busines of domaining?

Domaining isn't a business that lends itself to "success via ebook". Expressed differently, by the time "the secrets of success" are to be found in an ebook chances are pretty good that 1) they're no longer secrets, and 2) the secrets no longer work or no longer offer a competitive advantage.

What about an ebook that's a compilation of the best threads from various forums? Sure, that might save time, but 1) they're likely out of date; and, 2) that's likely copyright or TOS infringement - so do you really want to support that? Maybe if it's free but, these days, much of what is said to be free comes with a heavy promotional payload.

So, any of you old battle axes read a domaining ebook that was worth your time?

In addition to dnjournal.com, Ron also has a website for newbies, namenewbie.com.

This is the key, if you are going to be successful in domaining. No one is going to hand you their secrets. Kevin was a giant in domaining before anyone even heard of him in the forums. As far as I know he isn't writing ebooks yet.

Domaining isn't for everyone, especially not for those who aren't willing or able to spend countless hours sifting through forums, blogs, etc, and above all trying things (investing your money). It's only by trial and error that you will figure out what works and find your niche. Of course timing helps, and a little luck too.

Are you looking to flip domains, make ppc income through parking, or develop them to some extent? What is your technical and/or marketing background? Where is the traffic to come from - generic type-ins, existing links, organic seo, or? What kind of market niche are you interested in? How much do you have to invest and to lose on poor choices before you hit gold? Do you aim to make a living with it or just a supplemental income? What kind of domains are you thinking of picking up or already own? Are you already familiar with expired drops, landrush domains, domain auctions, the myriad kinds of tld, including the new .tel?

The internet is constantly and rapidly evolving - it presents lots of opportunities, but it always boils down to these two things - traffic x monetization.

that's afaik
