Forum Moderators: open
I'd like to draw more people to my website. It's a merchant site.
I've come to the point where I need to increase the number of backlinks in order to improve my Google (and other search engines) positioning.
I wish to submit my site to well targeted directories. Edit: <I am considering outsourcing the task.>
Edit: <How do I judge whether a link building service, including a directory submission service, is any good OR will do my website more good than harm? What criteria do you apply when selecting a link building or directory submission service?>
Thanks, I'd appreciate it,
Eric

Be sure to find a highly recommended company and to let them know exactly what type and quality of links you want.

DMOZ, Yahoo, and other paid directories might have been useful 5 years ago, but today they are pretty much irrelevant. In fact, I was a bit surprised to see that DMOZ is still around.

Simply find a handful of the most relevant directories for your topic (with a nice pagerank, and plenty of other RELEVANT sites) and submit to them.
DMOZ is still effective for Google, but bear in mind it can take many months to get indexed. I personally do not believe submitting to the Yahoo director for hundreds of dollars is worth it (unless you have a large budget) if your site is starting out.

The Yahoo directory is buried on their site so don't expect any traffic. Yahoo's own search engine gives no noticeable weight to a directory listing. The price is outrageous. The "human review" is a facade. It's a trap for the new webmaster trying to figure out the rules of the game.
DMOZ is irrelevant. I'd much rather compete with an SEO who wastes client money Yahoo/DMOZ.

DMOZ and Yahoo (business) are probably the worst directories in existence...DMOZ is irrelevant. I'd much rather compete with an SEO who wastes client money Yahoo/DMOZ.
No offense, but you are seriously talking out of your #%$. I think its safe to say that it's a general consensus that DMOZ and Yahoo provide some of the only valued directory links out there. I've seen the small boost it gives my sites/ client sites many times.
