Article Submission Site vs. Keeping Content

Most of us know that developing great content for your site is a very solid way to get better SE rankings. Many people accomplish this goal by writing articles. Another solid strategy is developing inbound links to your site, which again articles that you put out on other sites that link back is a good way to do that.

I came across a web site where you could submit articles [for free] you have written and this site would publish them and also send them out to other sites and through RSS feeds to try and get them published elsewhere. They allow you to attach key words to the articles and have up to 3 self-serving links in the article plus your resource box, which also can have a link back. Now the idea is that if you write a good article and it gets picked up by other sites as well as being published on this site that you could potentially get a lot of good inbound links.

Now the question, what is the general opinion of everyone...

Is it better to put your articles out on a service like this where it could be published on other sites and will most certainly be used as ad generating content on other sites, but you get good inbound links or is it better to keep those articles on your site and hope that people find them and as a result link to you so that you have good content on your site and inbound links?

On my site the idea of keeping the content has not really been working well for me. After almost 2 years my inbound links are a bit weak, but I have a lot of decent content, that really isn't being fully utilized, so when I came across this service it sounded good, but then I was wondering if I am giving up some of the best stuff to others, which should stay on my site.

What are others thoughts on this?

I don't know about you but I would have kept the content on the site if I were in your shoes. There are many other ways of getting noticed. Like, for example, social networks, forums, blog comments, bookmarking sites, as well as guest blogging and contests run on your blog/site. If it's good stuff I would suggest that you keep your content on your site and try leveraging other techniques of promoting and spreading the buzz if I can put it that way. Anyway, best of luck and I hope this gives you some idea for your future marketing strategy.

Why not do what a lot of people do and that is substantially rewrite the article for distribution to the article directories if you want to include it on your site. In the case of EzineArticles (the premier directory), you really need to do a 100% rewrite. They use a tool like Copyscape to find duplicates. The other directories aren't nearly as stringent, but you should do around a 50% rewrite.

Sometimes I submit to EzinesArticles first and then to the others as well as uploading it to my site.

eZinearticles.com is who I used as well and who I was referring to in the above post. So you actually like the idea of doing this and uploading the same article to your site? Doesn't that strip away the effectiveness of having it duplicated like that?

My thinking on this was to simply write articles which are good, but I have a ton of material so I figured I would distribute some of the material via article sites and keep some on my sites as well, but if I understand your post you think it is a good idea to put the same article in both places, which I wouldn't have thought of.

I agree re-write and condense your articles before submitting them to article sites. I know the content that I write is much more then the 500-700 words are looking for on this article sites.

ezinearticles ranks pretty well in the rankings and they have a pretty tough staff generally speaking. That is important also stick to the higher quality article submission sites

Could you sticky me on a few other high quality article submission sites you would suggest as good alternatives. I have heard that ezinearticles is the 800 pound gorilla in this space, but I figure it can't possibly hurt to put the material in a few other places as well.

When I started out as a freelance content writer, I would write articles and submit them to various article websites on an ongoing basis. However, ever since I have created my own website, I write and publish articles on this website only. This may be because I am short of time now and do not write too many articles as compared to earlier. However, now I wish to grow and build my website and thus, prefer to post almost all the articles I write here.

Haven't really thought too much about inbound links. I personally find it difficult to rewrite an article and reproduce it for use somewhere else. Any tips?

Go60Guy has a point here I would've done it his way. You get the best of both worlds like that, right?

Not only would I write articles for the article directories, but you should also consider some of the more grown up social sites such as Gather, Hub Pages and Squidoo. You can submit articles and drop links in them that, AFIK, do not carry "rel='nofollow'" tags. Just don't be too blatently commercial.

Then do another original article for submission to Eainearticles and the other article directories that has a link to your Gather and/or Hub Pages article. Do the same sort of thing for all your articles. You want your distributed articles with your backlinks to gain some rank. You'll get the idea. Make it viral.
