Facebook announced today that it is calling on its more than 350 million users to review and update their privacy settings—a first among major Internet services. In addition, Facebook will be rolling out easy-to-use tools to empower people to personalize control over their information—based on what the content is, why they are sharing it, when, and the audience they seek to reach.“Facebook is transforming the world’s ability to control its information online by empowering more than 350 million people to personalize the audience for each piece of content they share,” said Elliot Schrage, Vice President of Communications, Public Policy and Marketing. “We’ve always designed Facebook to enable people to control what information they share with whom—it’s the reason our service continues to attract such a broad and diverse group of users from around the world. We’re proud of the latest evolution we’re announcing today and we will continue to innovate to serve users’ changing needs.”
Everything is defaulting to Everyone even if I had it set to Friends or Friends of Friends.
For example, it's made my wall posts visible to everyone whereas before it was set to Networks and Friends.
I really wish they'd focus on getting the incessant bugs and slowdowns fixed before adding new stuff, which always adds new bugs.
However, I suppose overall this is a good change. I like the ease with which I can change the privacy settings for every status, photo, link, and so on.
ADDED: Yep I was right about introducing new bugs. The first time I tried saving my new settings I was prompted to download the PHP-based confirmation page. Dismissed that dialogue, reloaded the page and this time the changes were saved.
EFF even goes so far as to suggest, "those users who care about control over their privacy will have to decide for themselves whether participation in the new Facebook is worth such an extreme privacy trade-off."
FB quadruples their spiderable content in 24 hours. A good day for them.
I also think it's completely unreasonable to change the defaults that people have already set.
I tend to agree. Are people so enraged that they are being asked to moderate their own Privacy preferences - a once only task which takes about 10 seconds?
Really?! Why?! Why is that such a big deal? It's really simple and it takes ten seconds.
I don't get it. So many people were shouting about how they were going to quit Facebook forever. Why wouldn't they just change their Privacy Preferences (it would take about the same amount of time as deleting ones account) and continue as normal?
FB comes along and puts them all back to "please let google spider all your lovely content" settings and it's just deceitful. It's an enormous middle-fingered "yeah, well, we don't really agree with your privacy settings so we're going to ask you the question again until you give us the answer we want to hear".
and, as previously stated, many people will just press OK when a window pops up. I guess half of FB has just wiped their privacy settings and FB is over the moon about it.
I'd be interested to know on what foundation you base that assumption. Is it personal or derived from research? and if so what research. When you see that online privacy is one fo the biggest concerns of users (research) it raises my eyebrows when you say what you say.

Well, has Facebook changed their mind due to all criticism? Because when I did the wizard I got "keep current setting" as default?
