College Confidential has individual forums for over 400 colleges and universities, and has a popular “college visits” section where members can relate their campus visit experiences. ......Dooley, architect of the College Confidential site and community, will continue to manage it as the Hobsons U.S. vice president of online community development. “The members and volunteers are what make College Confidential special – I’ve known many of them for years. A key part of bringing the two companies together was that I’d be able to stay involved with the community,” Dooley said.
note: college confidential was built by WebmasterWorld admin and moderator of this forum RogerD. We are really blessed to have such and authority on community moderating here. Congrats Roger!
Having worked in (amongst others) educational publishing for many years, I'm all too familiar with their work in the UK and Europe. As both a company and a brand, Hobsons have had to regalvanise themselves quite dramatically over the last few years. With their interests in the burgeoning USA educational markets they'll do very well, particularly with such wise investments and strategic acquisitions!
They (Hobsons) used to be big in the EU-wide graduate careers/post-grad sector, but had to realign because, well, it was and still is a very difficult segment. Indeed, I believe - beyond any institutional sources - that there is still only one major private sector pan-EU publishing product left <cough> in what is nowadays a 27-country playing field ... :-)
Hobsons have drive, I'll give them that. They are eternally ambitious and typically British in their attitude towards acquisitions.
Well done, Rogerd. Well done, indeed!

Thank goodness a few folks like Brett had the vision to believe that Web communities could be an amazingly constructive endeavor, and that it was worth investing the time and the bandwidth. That commitment is why WebmasterWorld is the great venue that it is today, bringing thousands of Web pros together online every day, not to mention in person at Pubcon.
