Considering the millions of MySpace users and the lack of reporting on this issue, it's unlikely that they have some kind of condition that knocks some users offline. I'd have to guess it's some kind of hardware/software glitch on your end. For starters, I'd try a different browser and see what happens.

Also, I'd do a thorough virus/spyware scan of my machine. It's remotely possible you picked up some kind of script that tries to do something when it sees MySpace.

DSL, "breaking Internet connection" does not compute.

A DSL connection is "on all the time".

Does the DSL light go out on your DSL modem? (bad connection to the telco central office - problem with your modem, the telco line, or the modem at the other end).

Does Windows tell you that your connection is lost? (bad connection between your computer and the DSL modem).

I have tested on Firefox 1.5.0.6 over DSL (Windows XP) and IE 5 over dialup (Windows 98) and it does the same thing.

I haven't come across any other website that gives me this problem.

My computer pops up a message "network connection lost" and the page refuses to load. Any other programs that were using the connection are interrupted. I do eventually get my connection back, but it is putting me off from using that site.

The only other time I have had this happen to me was when I was running a logfile analysis program that did DNS lookups and it interrupted my connection.

Most DSL modems use an Ethernet connection to your computer. Windows will only pop-up that message when the physical Ethernet connection is broken.

I think the message is a fake, and not actually generated by Windows. Or, you have some virus software that is disabling the Local Area Connection.

It actually says "the network cable is unplugged" and can happen on any page on Myspace. I have a DSL line plugged into the back of my computer from the wall with a splitter for the phone on my desk.

Is the message you are seeing about the network connection being lost appearing in the task bar above the network icon? It seems like that would be hard to fake.

One off the wall idea - check your hosts file to see if by any chance you are being redirected to a bogus IP when you go to MySpace. I don't know how that would knock out your connection, but if you find an entry in there it would indicate something on your system has been compromised.

One last question - do you mean if you use someone else's computer it behaves in a similar manner? That would be REALLY odd. (I'm assuming a different ISP - if it's in your same network environment, then perhaps the router has some kind of weird entry in it.)

What about the "connected" lights on the back of your computer (next to the network cable) and on the DSL modem? Do they go out?

Here's one possibility: Windows will disconnect your LAN connection when you initiate a dial-up, Wi-Fi, etc. connection. You may have a rogue "dialer" program installed on your computer. "dialer" programs generate revenue for the author by calling a phone number for which you are charged a high per-minute rate. (Like a "900" number, but typically off-shore, often (for U.S. users) in a Carribean nation that can be dialed using just an area code.

If you have a phone modem installed, check your phone bill! In any case, check your Network Connections when this happens to see if another connection has been activated.

How this ties-in to Myspace, I dunno. Maybe there's some "trigger" on your Myspace page. I would delete all your "friends comments", or at least comments from "friends" who you do not know. (Lots of spamming on "friends" comments.)

Some people have reported in the past that certain benign text in emails, Web pages, etc, would be wrongly interpreted by the DSL modem as a command to drop the connection, when the DSL modem should just be passing everything as data without inspecting it.

I was curious, so did a Google search. You don't seem to be alone with this issue.

One forum post suggested that this was related to streaming media, and suggested a fix of changing the MTU value in the DSL modem setup. It had been set to "disabled". The suggested fix was to set it to "enabled" with a value of 1492. (Not sure why a DSL modem would have a "disabled" setting for MTU in the first place, as that doesn't make much sense...)

It also reminds me of a character string people used to post on Usenet to disconnect people's modems in days of yore, can't remember it now.

I am having exactly the same problems with myspace. I have a home network, and whenever one of my kids goes to myspace the home network goes into local mode with not internet connection. It also causes the home network to work really slowly. I have changed every cable in the house, have replaced modem, router, switch, and even bought a couple of new computers, but still this problem is here.
Does anyone have a fix for this?

I have this also and the firewall settings can be configured too high. Also, if you are running any kind of filter software to protect the kids from porn etc, that can kick you off as well, depending on the software.

The modem website is [10.1.1.1...] for speedstream 4200 if that helps.

But i'm getting no luck in fixing this problem either. I've searched alot of forums and alot of people are having the same problem, whether they be, wireless, USB or ethernet connected. When they log into myspace the modem does a default reset ? and you loose any internet connection at that time. Have found no difinitive answer to this, any help would be appreciated.

Turns out the ISP gave out dodgy end-of-line ADSL modems that have the disconnection problem. I tried to fix it myself with a firmware upgrade and broke it (the tech support was a rude so and so). Just bought a different modem and it works fine now.
