Starting an online auction service

I currently have about 60 members but the auction website has been up for almost a year, only one item was sold and the items that are up now were placed by me in order to give it a full look and to possibly entice people to join.

I have spent absolutely no money on advertising for two main reasons:

1.I don’t have that much money to spare, I am living on a limited income (very limited)

2.Because I am on such a limited income I’m scared if I do put money in advertising, people will find the ad, visit the site and leave because they will not see any items listed.

This is not a sell everything auction site like eBay, I am in no way trying to compete with eBay, my market is very limited to an outdoor activity.

I would like some advice on how to get the ball rolling and try some things to either get my current members to start participating or to get new visitors/members to start selling/bidding.

Currently the only fees the website carries are sold item fees; if your item doesn’t sell then you will not be charged.

Thanks for any help on this matter!

One fairly simple thing to do would be to waive ALL fees for a few months. It won't cut into your revenue at all (since you don't have any!), and might induce a few people to post items to sell.

IMHO , 60 Members is too small for any positive results or economic activity. You sold one item with 60 members.. That is very good.

Start getting more members...somehow.

Advertising is the obvious way. But if that is too expensive then try posting in free classified sites etc .

You need thousands of members for a sustained biz. model. It will involve a lot of time and work AND that is why the site will become valuable over time.

A question that popped into my head... How many of those 60 members are "active" members? You could have 60 folks signed up, but only 5 or 6 come back regularly.

So examine your visitor retention stats, and perhaps add some tools to keep folks coming back. For instance, maybe an ebay rss feed showing products related to your niche. If you are offering free listings for a few months, there is no harm in showing some competitor listings to keep your content fresh... And it is not like ebay is a secret, every one know they are there. You need to find ways to differentiate yourself.

Good luck!
