The next big blog trend is about what you and your friends see and others don't.

The online medium built for loudmouths is taking an inward turn to focus on private conversations among friends and family, instead of requiring bloggers to write for a public stage as most current publishing tools do.

That's interesting. I suspect some people thought their public blogs were OK for this purpose until the content ended up indexed in Google et al.

Though I haven't done it yet, I've often thought about setting up a private discussion forum for family communications, particularly now that we are scattered around the country. It seems like a friendly way to let everyone talk and to organize conversations by topic.

I've been running private forums for some time and it really helps friends, family and businesses stay in touch. I'd guess giving it the "blog" name will help it gain mass market appeal.

We already have this set up on a local community site (using drupal), where the volunteers who maintain the site have chats, and practice "in the back" I can then encourage them to post out front if it's of relevance.

The volunteers are shy and blogging is still a relatively alien concept in our small town - so this is my way of helping them get used to how it works and what it can do - rather than using a forum.
