Forum donations

Do forum members donate money to help you run forums?

Hey,

I run a few small forums. What is your experience as far as "forum donations" are concerned. Do people actually donate money to help you run forums (via Paypal I guess) or they just don't do it. Is it worth setting the donation page up (and make some decent money)? Thanks,

Tom

if it is just about donation, i just close such sites. begging is not the best way to do business.

So you'd just close WebmasterWorld too..? [webmasterworld.com...]

I don't mean forums that beg for donations - I mean regular forums on various topics that have a "Donate" link. I hope this is more clear now.

As long as the purpose for asking for donations is clear, and as long as the use of such donated funds are explained -- yes, people do.

Why do you need donations? What other alternatives are there? How will my money be used? Do I receive any other benefits from donating?

Well, the main purpose would be to "pay for lunch" for forum admin and moderators who sometimes sit several hours a day moderating and contributing to forums (their posts are of consultative/informative nature - the users would have to pay for such services elsewhere).

I know it's not a "great" purpose but I guess it's better to be fair with the potential donators than to try to tell them the money will be sent to charities... There are no real benefits for donators other than they can enjoy the forums.

There's nothing wrong with it.

When you set it up, making it as simple and quick as you can for people to donate.

If you wanted to, you could increase the incentive by making people who donate eligible for a monthly draw for something.

I had a donate link years ago on one forum. I did get some donations, and listed the people on a donations page so they got credit.

I wasn't comfortable asking for money so I put up advertising instead. I want my content free for anyone and didn't want people to feel obligated to contribute money. Luckily some of my visitors click ads and it monetizes my site.

I have a premium membership level for a certain yearly amount, and there are some extra features that come along with that. People go for it both for the features and also for the "donation" aspect of it. The amount doesn't add up to too much, but it does cover the costs. If you're asking for donations, you may want to throw in some goodies as an incentive.

One thing I have seen done (and is probably quite effective), is to display ads on the forum, and then offer paid memberships that allow users to view the forum ad free.

I will be starting a blog shortly to chronicle the development of my social website and I was considering displaying a donations button to help assist in the development of the actual site.

Due to my site being in the developmental stage, I am obviously earning no income and am using my own savings. The site is for a particular ethnic community so I feel there may be more interest in community members helping a project like mine along.

Anyone with thoughts on what I propose?

Btw, this is my first ever post here so it is nice to meet everyone!

Kind regards,

rosen
