What about for "for profit" wikis?
Not necessarily a wiki littered with ads, I mean a wiki about a specific commericial topic (like widgets) that is run by a commercial organization.
With a forum (I already have a forum setup), there is an interaction between members that makes it more inviting.
What incentive would a person have to contribute to the wiki?
Do the author's of articles get links back to their sites as credit? Would the link still be worth it if it was ref=nofollow?
I think I'm trying to figure out how to create an actual useful wiki on a commercial topic without it being overrun with spam links.
A more intangible benefit is that some people enjoy writing, either in general or about specific topics.
I do think it may be a challenge finding a large number of participants who are motivated to help without being inclined to spam the content with links or slant the content in a way that benefitis them, but I suppose it depends on the topic.

Thanks for the input, Roger. That's one benefit that I hadn't thought of.
Any other folks with input?
I don't see many "author credits" in wikipedia. Is crediting the author something that is done on other wikis?
