"Korea Swimming against Tide in Digital Age"

In a November 6 article posted on its website, WP said that Google’s Chrome and Apple's Safari are dominating the global web browser market, but the outmoded Internet Explorer (IE) is still quite popular in digitally savvy South Korea.

The browser’s popularity is reported to be attributable to a governmental decision made in 1999. Under the laws on Internet security, which passed 14 years ago, IE is the only option for online shopping and Internet banking in Korea because most Korean web sites must use Active X controls from IE for financial transactions online.

They are still not admitting the real problem. They should be saying something like:

"It was stupid idea for a government to require that every uses a particular technology, and an even more stupid idea to require that every use a proprietary technology that ties them to one vendor. We promise to to try this sort of central planning again".

Didn't Yale once try something similar w/r/t student computers? Lasted about five minutes, as I recall.

Yes! Finally lets get rid of this. As an expat living in South Korea I find using websites here a huge pain. Everybody --and I mean everybody-- wants you to download and run their active X controls to do the simplest most mundane things like look up movie schedules.

And a lot of them are so poorly written that they are constantly being patched/updated. It seems like at least once a week my wife has to sit through 10 minutes of updates/downloads when doing online banking with KEB.
